What is Satin?

Satin is a type of material that is very smooth and silky to the touch. Some people confuse silk with satin, though these are really two different things. Silk can, however, be used to make satin fabric.

Satin is very popular as a material to make clothing and bedding out of, and even the outside of certain types of shoes. It is especially popular for night-time clothing, because it is very comfortable to sleep in.

The reason as to why satin is so much smoother than other types of material is because of the way that it is woven. Normal material has a natural, typical weave, but satin has a different sort of weave that utilizes filament fibers, such as those found in nylon, polyester, or silk. If the yarns that are used to make satin are short staple yarns (like cotton), then the resulting fabric is actually called sateen.

As mentioned, the reason why satin is so smooth is because the float count on the satin weaving structure is so high. Floats are the number of interlacings that are missed while the weave is being produced. Since so many interlacings are missed while weaving satin, the lustre and softness of satin is very apparent.
